Cake Smash Sessions: 5 Things You Need to Know

What is a Cake Smash Session?

If you're new to cake smash photography, here's a quick rundown. A cake smash session is a fun and popular way to celebrate your little one's first birthday. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity to capture adorable moments of your baby enjoying a cake. In fact, many parents use these photos for their birthday invitations! The cake smash element involves letting your baby have fun with the cake, allowing them to explore and get messy. We start with some clean shots of your family and baby before the cake is introduced, and then we let your child take the lead. Trust me—babies love the freedom to smash and explore a cake!

When Should You Book a Cake Smash Session?

Cake smash sessions are most commonly booked to commemorate a baby’s first birthday. Ideally, you’ll want to schedule the session when your baby is around 11 months old, so you can use the photos for their birthday. To ensure you have enough time for editing, it's best to book your cake smash session at least a month before you plan to use the images. This gives me ample time to edit and deliver the photos so you can have them ready for your celebrations.

What Cake is Best for a Cake Smash Session?

Selecting the right cake is key for a successful cake smash photo session. Here are a few tips:

  1. Avoid vegetable shortening (Copha) in the cake. This substance can stain backdrops and isn’t great for your baby’s first cake.

  2. For colors, steer clear of chocolate and bright red. These can create messy and unattractive photos.

  3. A light sponge cake with buttercream or whipped frosting is perfect. These textures are easy for your baby to dive into and play with.

  4. Dense cakes or solid fondant frosting can be too tough for your little one to smash, so keep things soft and light.

What Size Should the Cake Be for a Cake Smash Session?

A professionally made cake is the best way to go, ensuring the cake complements the overall aesthetic and décor. (I can recommend a great local cake maker!) The size of the cake is important—opt for a cake that’s large enough to be noticeable, but not so large that it overpowers your baby. Typically, one or two-layer cakes are the ideal choice. Make sure it’s small enough that your baby can sit behind it and still be visible in the photos.

Is a Cake Smash Session Safe for My Baby?

Many parents worry about whether it's safe for their baby to eat cake at such a young age. The reality is, cake smash photo sessions are incredibly fun, but most babies eat very little, if any, of the cake. It's messy, but the focus is on the fun and memories, not on the cake consumption. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • A small amount of sugar won’t harm your baby. Babies are familiar with sweetness through breast milk or formula, so they are naturally drawn to it.

  • You can opt for a healthier cake with less sugar if you're concerned. I can help find or recommend sugar-free or dairy-free cake recipes that are still fun for your baby to smash.

  • It doesn't have to be a cake. If you prefer, you can go for alternatives like a spaghetti smash or a watermelon smash—still equally adorable and fun.

  • Focus on the memories. A cake smash session is over faster than you might think, and your baby likely won’t consume as much sugar as you imagine. The most important thing is the joy and memories you’ll capture.

Regardless of your concerns, hiring a professional photographer to capture this milestone is an investment you’ll never regret. You'll treasure these photos forever!
