When you picture newborn photos, do you see your baby curled up, fast asleep, tucked into a tiny bed or basket, wrapped in soft layers and cuddling a little teddy?
If that sounds like your style, a posed newborn photography session in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs might be the perfect fit for your family.
At Studio Z Photography in Forest Hill (16 Stevens Rd, Forest Hill VIC 3131, Australia), I work with families who love that classic, styled look. Think rich colours, thoughtful props and images that feel like little pieces of art, ready to frame and hang in your home.
Posed newborn photography is all about gentle, intentional setups. Baby is usually photographed asleep, snuggled into supported poses, using blankets, wraps and props to create a polished look.
In a posed session, I focus on:
Curled, sleepy positions that show just how tiny your baby really is
Close up details like eyelashes, lips, fingers and toes
Styling that ties everything together so your gallery feels cohesive
The aim is to create images that feel timeless and beautiful, while still feeling like your baby and your family.
My home studio in Forest Hill is set up specifically for posed newborn photography in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs. Everything you see in my portfolio is here and ready for you to use, so you do not need to bring anything except your baby and a few essentials.
In the studio you will find:
Some photographers work only in white and beige. While I love a neutral palette, I also enjoy using colour in a way that still feels soft and refined. Deep blues, muted greens, warm terracotta, blush pinks and mustard tones can all be incorporated, depending on what you are drawn to.
Before your session, I will ask a few quick questions about:
The colours you love
How you decorate your home
Where you might display your photos
This helps me design sets that feel personal, rather than something generic.
Posed newborn sessions are calm and unhurried. Most last around two hours, which gives us time to settle your baby, move through different setups and allow for feeds and cuddles.
A typical session looks something like this:
Settling and feeding
When you arrive at the studio, I will get baby comfy, give them a feed and help them drift into a deep sleep.
Wrapped and prop setups
I usually start with wrapped poses in a little bed or basket. These are perfect for adding colour and texture and work well for even the wriggliest babies.
Simple blanket poses
Once baby is settled, I may move to simpler poses on a blanket. Here the focus is on tiny features, soft expressions and all those details you never want to forget.
Family and sibling photos
If you have chosen to include parents or siblings, we bring everyone in for snuggly family images that sit beautifully alongside the posed portraits.
The studio is kept warm and cosy, with white noise playing quietly in the background. Your baby leads the way. If they need a break, a feed or just a cuddle, we pause and follow their rhythm rather than the clock.
Posed newborn photography can look very effortless in the final gallery, but there is a lot happening behind the scenes to keep your baby safe.
Your baby’s safety is the most important part of every session. I will never:
Force a pose that does not feel right for your baby
Place your baby in an unsupported position
Continue with a setup if your baby shows signs of discomfort
Some of the more complex images you may see online are created using composites. This means two or more images are combined in editing so that an adult is always supporting your baby during the actual photo. If a pose is not suitable for your little one, we simply skip it. There are many safe, comfortable options we can use instead.
A posed newborn photography session in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs is a lovely choice if you:
Love the idea of your baby in tiny beds, baskets or styled setups
Enjoy colour, texture and a more polished, artistic look
Want images that feel like finished artwork for your walls or albums
Prefer a studio environment where everything is set up and ready
If you are more drawn to relaxed, unposed moments and lots of natural interaction, a lifestyle style session might be a better fit for you. Many families choose posed newborn photos first, then follow up later with more relaxed milestones or family sessions as their baby grows.
If you are based in or around Forest Hill, Blackburn, Vermont, Nunawading or the wider Melbourne Eastern Suburbs and you would love colourful, posed newborn photos, I would be honoured to photograph your baby at Studio Z Photography.
