Family Photographer Melbourne - What To Wear For Your Big Family Portrait Session (Bushland Edition)

There is nothing quite as special as capturing three, even four generations in one frame. From the proud grandparents to the tiniest newborns, these "Big Family" sessions are some of my favourites to shoot across Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs.

However, I know that coordinating 10, 15, or 20 people can feel like a logistical puzzle! To help your session run smoothly and ensure your portraits look timeless, I’ve put together this step-by-step preparation guide.

Step 1: Coordinate the "Village" (The 3-Generation Colour Palette)

When you have multiple families coming together, the goal is coordination, not matching. We want to avoid the "uniform" look (like everyone in identical white shirts and jeans).

  • The Bushland Rule: Avoid wearing all black. It creates too much contrast against the soft, natural textures of the Australian bush.

  • Pick a Theme: Choose two "hero" colours and ask everyone to work within that palette.

    • Example A: Pinks, blues, and white.

    • Example B: Earthy browns, oranges, and cream.

  • Mix it Up: Encourage a mix of solid colours and subtle floral patterns. If someone is stuck, neutrals like grey, white, or beige are always safe bets to tie the group together.

Step 2: Prioritise Comfort for All Ages

From toddlers to great-grandparents, comfort shows on camera.

  • The "New Clothes" Test: Ensure the grandkids have worn their outfits at least once before the session. Stiff collars or itchy tags can lead to tears before we even start!

  • Fabric Choice: Soft, flowing fabrics photograph much better than stiff materials that ride up and hide necks or faces when people sit down.

  • Glasses: If you or the grandparents wear transition lenses, please bring a non-transition pair or be happy to go without them so we can see your eyes in the sunlight.

Step 3: Footwear for Grass

We love our Blackburn parklands, but they require sensible shoes!

  • We will be walking through the grass. If it has rained recently, it might be a bit "squelchy."

  • Closed-toe shoes or stylish boots are much better than thin heels, which will sink into the dirt.

Step 4: Timing for the Littlest (and Oldest) Members

Large sessions involve many schedules, but the "VIPs" are usually the babies and the elderly.

  • Avoid Nap Times: Please don't book during a baby's nap time. If their schedule shifts, use the "reschedule" button in your booking email. I’d rather move the time than have a miserable bub!

  • Morning Energy: Most children under 6 are at their best in the morning. Keep this in mind for the best smiles.

Step 5: The "No-Stress" Strategy for Parents

I have a "superpower" for getting kids to engage, usually involving farty noises, peek-a-boo, and general silliness.

  • Don't Force the Smile: When parents constantly say "Smile!" or "Look at the camera!", it actually distracts the kids from me. Trust me to lead the interaction.

  • Bribes over Threats: Avoid telling children off during the session. Instead, use "positive incentives" (like a family milkshake or park play) for after the session.

  • Snack Attack: Ensure kids are fed before they arrive. If you bring snacks, make sure they aren't "messy" (no chocolate or coloured lollies that stain tongues!).

Step 6: Make it a Celebration!

Why not make this big family gathering a real event? I love capturing "lifestyle" moments. Feel free to bring:

  • A picnic setup.

  • A "Mad Hatter’s" tea party theme.

  • Whimsical props like crowns, capes, or wooden swords for the grandkids.
